Birth and Post Natal Doula Training Courses

These 2 courses are designed for women who are considering working as Birth or Post-Natal Doulas or both. Doulas provide support to women in a caring nurturing manner and understanding the philosophy behind the support that Doulas provide to other women is an important part of training. Students should be aware that completion of a Doula training course is the not the end of the road in terms of becoming a Doula it is merely the beginning of a Doula's journey and self-awareness and personal reflection are an important aspect of being a Doula.

The Birth Doula course lasts 2.5 days

The Post-Natal Doula course is 1.5 days


Course Dates in 2009:


2nd-5th April (Birth course first 2.5 days and Post-Natal course is the last 1.5 days)
5th -8th Nov (Birth course first 2.5 days and Post-Natal course is the last 1.5 days)

Venue: Reading University

Course Length: 4 consecutive days for both courses (or 2.5 for birth doula and 1.5 for post natal doula course)

Suitable For:
Women who wish to support other women either during labour as a birth doula, or in the home following birth as a post-natal doula. Students do not need to have their own children to do the course however students attending the birth doula course who have had children will have the opportunity to share their own birth experience.

Course Content: Depending on which parts of the course students take the content will include some or all of the following: role of the doula, doula journey, birth debrief, personal reflection and self-awareness, writing a birth plan, commitment to natural childbirth, supporting a woman's choices, birth anatomy & physiology, optimal foetal positioning, bonding, needs of mother in first 6 weeks, interpreting signs- what is/is not normal, when to seek medical help, infant feeding, working with health professionals, NHS policies/protocols, communication & listening skills, finding work as a doula, contracts, support networks.

Cost: Birth Doula Course £225 / Post-Natal Doula Course £175 / Birth and Post-Natal Together £400
